CLEVELAND -- Allowing nine runs in the last two innings wasnt the worst thing that happened to the New York Yankees on Thursday night. Adrian Clayborn Jersey . New Yorks 9-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians was overshadowed by the news that rookie sensation Masahiro Tanaka has a partially torn ligament in his right elbow. General manager Brian Cashman said in a conference call during the game that Tanaka could return in six weeks, but didnt rule out the possibility of Tommy John surgery if the right-hander doesnt respond to a rehab program. "Certainly disappointed for our player, for our organization," Cashman said. "Hes been an important piece. We have a tremendously gifted and tough player. Well see how he responds." "It is what it is," manager Joe Girardi said. "Were not going to have him for at least six weeks and thats the tough part, but Im optimistic that well have him back." Tanaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday and had an MRI in New York, one day after his worst major league outing. He flew to Seattle on Thursday. Cashman said Tanaka saw three doctors, including Yankees head physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad, and all three agreed that a six-week rehab program was the best option at this time. "If we knew today that the best course of action was Tommy John surgery, despite the name and the amount of the investment, we would be doing Tommy John surgery," Cashman said. Girardi, looking for any positive sign, said, "Guys have had success doing this and well keep our fingers crossed. That gives you reason for optimism that hes going to pitch again for us this year." Tanaka, who is tied for the major league lead with 12 wins, allowed five runs and 10 hits -- both career highs -- over 6 2-3 innings Tuesday night in a 5-3 loss to the Indians. The All-Star is 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts, but has lost three of his past four outings. The injury is a huge blow to a battered Yankees rotation already was missing CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda to injuries. Tanaka had been a stabilizing ace in his first season since arriving from Japan. "Weve lost 80 per cent of it," Girardi said. "Theres really not a whole lot that you can go back and redo. Youve just got to go out and find a way." Mets ace Matt Harvey initially tried to rehab a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament last year before ultimately opting for Tommy John surgery. Harvey has been sidelined all season, but his rehabilitation appears to be going well. "When it comes time to trying to work through it, its a personal decision. Going down and having Tommy John surgery is a personal decision in itself. Everybody is different. No one is saying that he cant rehab and be completely fine and never have an issue again. For me, personally, it was a mental thing. It was something I didnt want to continue thinking about," Harvey said Thursday night in New York. "I would tell him to just go with what you feel. I didnt listen to anybody. I went off of my personal feelings. Its your body that you want to throw with again. If you want to go out and try not to have it, and your mind is set to that and youre 100 per cent committed to that, then more power to you. If its the other way around, then go get it done." Derek Jeter, playing his final regular-season game in Cleveland, went 2 for 4 in the 1,000th multihit game of his career. "You cant sit around and feel sorry for yourselves," he said. "Its unfortunate, its not what we planned coming out of spring training, but it gives some other guys some opportunities to step up and fill some voids. Its unfortunate but what can you do? You have to move on." Jeter was hit on the wrist by Michael Brantleys groundball RBI single in the eighth, but said he was fine. Prior to the game, the Yankees placed Carlos Beltran on the seven-day concussion list. Beltran was hit in the face with a ball that caromed off the batting cage Wednesday and broke his nose. The game did nothing to lift the Yankees spirits. New York took a 3-0 lead into the seventh, but the Indians scored four times to go ahead and blew it open with a five-run eighth. Carlos Carrasco (2-3) pitched a scoreless inning to help the Indians gain a four-game split. Ichiro Suzuki had a pinch-hit single in the eighth for his 2,800th major league hit. Zelous Wheeler hit a two-run homer in the fourth for New York. Yankees starter David Phelps took a shutout into the seventh before Chris Dickerson and Roberto Perez singled. Jason Kipnis singled off the glove of reliever Matt Thornton (0-3) to load the bases. Girardi initially thought the groundball could have been a double play if it hadnt deflected off Thorntons glove. "It happens, its a reaction," he said. "You want your pitchers to try to field balls, but that happened to be one that is the double play ball that were looking for." Yangervis Solarte, recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Beltran, had an RBI single in the fifth. NOTES: The Indians presented Jeter with an electric guitar before the game. The white guitar with blue Yankees pinstripes was inscribed with Jeters No. 2 and the words, "The Captain." ... "I have had no discussions with Chad Johnson or his representation," Popp said Friday in an email. However, he appeared to confirm a report on Twitter from TSN this week that Johnson was on Montreals negotiation list.It has been over two years since Diana Matheson’s stunning 92nd minute, Olympic bronze medal winning goal against France at City of Coventry Stadium during the 2012 London Games. The members of the Canadian Women’s National soccer team, hosts of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, have covered a lot of ground since seeing their flag rise. With automatic qualification for the World Cup granted to Canada as hosts, they were not forced to play in the CONCACAF tournament that determined the region’s other representatives. Instead they have contested a series of international friendlies and participated in other international tournaments. Most recently , the Women’s National soccer team capped off a busy 2014 with a victory and a draw against Sweden, two games that showcased both how far the team has come since their Olympic success in London and how far they still have to go before they open the World Cup in Edmonton next year. Were not there yet,” said head coach John Herdman. “To win World Cups you have to be able to beat teams by a couple of goals. Germany, on any given day, can score two or three past teams. But thats where weve got to get. We cant be that one-goal wonder team that will only beat you 1-0. So over the next months weve got to keep cracking at that and working on that front five. While Canada also enjoyed victories this year over Finland, Italy and Ireland, perhaps their best result of the year was earned in a 1-1 draw with the United States. They held the world’s number one-ranked team scoreless for 77 minutes before conceding. It was during that game that then 18-year-old Toronto native Kadeisha Buchanan, having already displayed her defensive skills keeping American striker Abby Wambach off the scoreboard, tallied her first goal for the Senior National team. The future is bright, said veteran Canadian midfielder Desiree Scott about her teammate Buchanan after the draw with the Americans. “An 18-year-old, going toe-to-toe with some of the best strikers in the world and she scores a goal... Unbelievable performance. TSN Soccer Analyst Jason deVos is also impressed with the skills already shown by the Canadian youngster and thinks she has the capacity to grow into an even more impressive player. “I think she has the potential to go on to become one of the best central defenders in the world in the women’s game,” said deVos. “She’s got everything you look for in a central defender, she’s quick, strong, aggressive, good on the ball and she has good natural instincts.” Buchanan, who has since turned 19, was identified by Herdman as one of the players that would need to step up when one of the two key injuries Canada has suffered sinnce the Olympics took place. Ricardo Allen Jersey. In March of 2014, defender Lauren Sesselmann suffered a cruciate injury to her knee, sidelining her for the remainder of the year. The 31-year-old started all six games for Canada at the Olympics and was one of the standout players in the bronze medal effort. Any time we lose a player it affects us emotionally, said Canadian goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc after Sesselmann was injured. I think what Lauren brought is that aggressiveness, that toughness and she had leadership in her own way.” In October the injury bug struck again as Matheson tore her left ACL in a loss against Japan. The veteran of 161 National appearances was hopeful at the time of the injury that she would be ready to participate in the World Cup, citing a previous injury recovery as a timeline. Obviously I want to be in a World Cup, so that’s my goal, said Matheson after the injury. I had surgery the November before (the Games) as well, she said. Hopefully I can make a similar comeback. With the tying goal in the second friendly against Sweden, Canadian captain Christine Sinclair continues to produce for the National team and remains the best and most important member of the squad. “She still has the ability to win games on her own,” said deVos about Sinclair. “That’s something the Canadian players and coaching staff know. They’ll need her to be at her best if they are going to go far in the tournament.” Another key player to the Canadian Olympic team is 32-year old Melissa Tancredi, who returned to the Canadian lineup for three games this year after taking a break from the team to go back to school. She started in two losses to Japan and came off the bench in the draw against the Americans. With the competitive year now over for Canada, the team will start to focus on tightening up the roster and paring down the players that will eventually become the team that will compete at the World Cup. “When we get to Christmas time, we’ve got some assessments we want to make about the squad we take in January,” said Herdman. “This is a chance for people to get game time under their belt before we begin again next year and it gets more serious.” Canada heads into the draw as FIFA’s eighth-ranked women’s soccer team based on the most recent list (released in September). They were down one spot from the seventh they held in the previous ranking and have fluctuated between the two positions since the London Games. At the 2011 Women’s World Cup Canada was drawn into a group with France, Nigeria and host Germany and they failed to win a game, with Sinclair scoring their only goal in an opening game loss to the home side.
